General information

At Moffatt & Co. we want to ease the process of for you to design, develop, and issue tokens and medals. On this page we will guide you through the things that need to be considered when planning and ordering tokens and medals and some price guidelines for various services.

Artwork

 We can provide art and graphic services from simple 2 dimensional text to high relief 3 dimensional sculptures and anything in between.

 There are some important things to consider when preparing a coin design.  The more elaborate the design the more expensive the artwork and the dies will cost. All artwork will be quoted on a per piece basis after review by our artists. Another thing to consider is size limitations. A 16 inch logo with lots of fine detail and small text looks great at original size, but when it is reduced down to 1 inch all the fine details and text will all but disappear. Our sales staff and artist can assist you with design suggestions before production begins to ensure your coin or medal will have the most attractive design possible.

 A single piece of artwork can be made into numerous different size coins or tokens with no additional art charges, die charges still apply. This includes all types of art from black and white to sculptures.

 Types of files

We can accept all types of graphic files, and cad files. We do request that with any cad files that you send a graphic file for our sales department.

Graphic art, Text, and logos,

 We prefer to begin with camera ready art work, but we can work formats all the way down to sketches drawn on napkins. To ready your design from camera ready art work there is no added charge. To develop art from concept the rate is $27 /hr with 2-3 hours normally required. Send in your art work for an estimate.

 Please provide the cleanest and most non pixilated artwork as possible. Clean up of rough artwork will be billed at the posted rate. We recommend a minimum of 300 dpi for graphics files.

 We will fax or email finished artwork at actual coin / token size to you for approval. After your approval has been signed and returned we will begin engraving your dies. Please review your artwork proof carefully. Changes requested after your approval will result in new art and possible die charges.

 For black and white artwork, the black areas will be raised on the coin.

Types of coins and their related artwork

The first decision is what type of design you want. There are 3 basic types of designs for minting. These are 2D, 2-1/2D, and 3D.

2D is simple 2 dimensional flat text, logos, and designs. 2D is the least expensive option. These types of designs can be made with a single piece of black and white artwork.

 2-1/2D is basically a 2D image with an added layer of 2D art over the base layer. This will show up as two distinctive levels on the finished product. This type of design requires two pieces of art with the positions matched in relation to each other. If you have a logo or design like this please send in your artwork for a quote. 2-1/2D can also be a flat 2D design that our engraver can hand model in some texture or other details. Ask your sales representative for details.

3D is a fully 3 dimensional design for designs like portraits, landscapes, etc. 3D art for minting can be developed in numerous ways. We can accept photos, picture files, cad files, or hand drawings. The more complete the art work the less your cost will be.

Sculptures

 Moffatt & Co. has some of the best bas relief sculptors in the country available to provide stunning 3D sculpted renditions of your designs. Sculptures are a cost that is above and beyond art and dies. Sculptures start at $1200.00 and go up from there. If you want the absolute highest quality, please submit your art and concept to our sales staff and we will work up a quote for you and discuss all the options.

 Dies

Moffatt and Co. will use your art work to create the dies necessary to strike the token, coin, or medallion you want. When you commission a custom die from Moffatt & Co. that die belongs to you, and you may request it at anytime. No one else is allowed to use that die without your expressed written permission.

 As a convenience we offer at no charge to store your dies securely on site at our production facility. This is so we can run future orders for you with out having to wait for your die(s) to arrive, and also that the dies are protected from damage or theft. Dies that are damaged after they leave our facility and need to be repaired before they can be used for a reorder will be subject to charges at the current shop rate. If your dies are for any type of limited or secure issue we can deface the dies after use, by your written permission, to prevent any further or unauthorized use and either send you the defaced dies or scrap them at our facility.

Die samples

 Per your request pre hardened die lead test strike samples of your designs can be made and sent over night for $45 (can include 2 samples). This service is offered so you can preview what your coins will look like struck incase you want to tweak any part of your design before the die is hardened. It is far easier to make minor adjustments to the dies before the dies are hardened. After your signed authorization the dies will be hardened. Any changes after the dies are hardened will result in new dies having to be made with the resulting charges added to your order.

Die charges

 Just like artwork the more elaborate the design the more expensive the die cost will be. Dies are divided in to the same 3 categories as the art work, 2D, 2-1/2D, and 3D.

 All die charges will be quoted on a per piece basis.

2D dies are dies with flat text and / or logos and simple designs.

Prices for 2D dies are as follows:

Up to 1.125” diameter                                      $200.00+

30mm (1.181”) – 1.75” diameter                      $400.00

2-1/2 D dies have 2 or more levels of flat text, logos, or designs imposed over each other. On the finished coin these layers will appear as distinctive levels. 2-1/2D dies can also include some light modeling. Modeling is where our engraver can take a 2D design and hand cut small amounts of textures, features, or other added relief to the image. This can give flat 2D designs some feeling of a 3D design with out the cost of a 3D die. Speak with our sales associates for more details.

Up to 1.125” diameter                                      $275.00+

30mm (1.181”) – 1.75” diameter                      $475.00+

3D dies. 3D dies are by far the most attractive designs for coining, but they have the cost to go along with it. Moffatt & Co. can create 3D to fit your requirements at competitive prices. As mentioned in the art work section, 3D dies can be made from black and white art, photos, cad files, hand cut, or made from sculptures.

PACKAGING AND SHIPPING

Standard shipping for tokens is 1,000 pieces bulk packed into sealed poly bags, up to 5 bags (approx 62 lbs total) into a shipping container. Standard shipping is via USPS. Shipping charges are $15 per 5,000 tokens DELIVERED anywhere in the US! For larger token sizes fewer pieces fit into the shipping containers and these will be adjusted as required. Please note that tracking is not available with this shipping option, only signature verification of delivery. Insurance which is traceable is available for $7 extra per shipping container. We can also ship via UPS or FedEx. These will be quoted as requested and typically cost 3x as much depending on delivery location.

 For large orders we can ship via common carrier trucking companies. We can load 55 gallon drums with the poly bagged product, (approx 150K pieces max to a drum, (a full drum weighs ~1800 lbs), or we can load filled shipping containers secured on pallets with a maximum of 20 shipping containers to a pallet (approx 1200 lbs). Some additional handling charges will apply in these situations.
