About Us

Starting Small

Moffatt and Co. was founded in October 2007. Since we are getting off the ground we are at this time able to offer a small range of standard token sizes in the basic alloy 260 (70/30 brass), and standard silver rounds from ¼ oz – 1 oz with plain edges. Presently we can provide other sizes but there are minimum quantity restrictions, so please feel free to please call for more information.

While we are starting small we do have big plans. As soon as we are able we will be expanding our product lines and offerings to include all of the US standard token sizes and alloy combinations. We have plans and the know how to go beyond the standard alloys and shapes to include items like bimetallic tokens, odd shaped tokens (square, rectangles, scallops, etc), reeded, and special edges, as well as services like antiquing, lacquering, autobagging, and many other value added services and product enhancements that are too numerous to list here.

We have several high speed Schuler coining presses with an initial capacity of well over 1 million pieces per week. We also have an automatic multi-stroke HME coining press with a capacity of up to 1.75” (44.5mm) diameter in proof like finishes.

While the company is new the operating partners, Sean Moffatt and Timothy Grat, have decades of experience in the minting trade.

Sean was Operations Manager for a large private mint for 19 years where he oversaw the production of over 65 million units per year, until the company was sold and after several months the new owners relocated production and retained none of the experienced staff. Sean has attended several Mint Directors Conferences and numerous industry events, and he is thoroughly networked in the minting trade. Sean’s education background includes 4 years of electronics. Sean can design, build, and maintain machine and industrial controls. Sean has experience as an electrician, machinery rigger / transporter, a haz-mat transport driver, cryogenic filling plant technician, and an electronics technician. Sean is proficient with AutoCAD for tooling design, facility design, and plant layouts. Sean has the mechanical ability to tear our coining presses and support equipment down to the frame and rebuild or repair most all problems in house. Sean is an experienced machinist and builds many of the tooling parts he designs. Sean has been a company OSHA / safety / HAZ-MAT officer overseeing the safety of the staff and implementation of all required safety programs.

Sean has been involved in numismatics for over 35 years, specializing in circulating world coins and currency issued since about 1800, and collector coins with interesting or advanced technologies. He has written and co-authored numerous technical coin related articles for hobby publications and websites, and has been an adviser to several numismatic authors. Sean is in the process of writing a book exploring the mechanical causations of the different types of minting errors.

Timothy was Chief Coiner for Gallery Mint for 10 years until the company was shut down in late ’06 mainly due to the passing of one of the owners. As a seminar instructor for the American Numismatic Association, Timothy combined his technical skill and historical research to create and teach a mini-course on “Early Minting Technology”. He has since given detailed demonstrations and presentations about minting technology to many different organizations nationwide. Timothy’s specialization is not limited to production. He is also a proficient coin authenticator and counterfeit detection expert.

The combination of these two unique skill sets has prepared Moffatt & Co. to enter into the mainstream token and coin markets as well as the high end esoteric numismatic collectibles market as an experienced and serious competitor. Moffatt & Company’s high speed equipment, low overhead and central US location in NW Arkansas gives us an excellent cost advantage and allows us to compete both nationally and globally for coining contracts.

As can seen from a review of the operating partners backgrounds, Grat and Moffatt share several things in common, including a driving passion for coins and numismatics, a thorough understanding of the minting process.

What’s in a name

Our company name is derived from two sources. First off the Presidents surname is Moffatt. Secondly the company draws inspiration from the original Moffat and Co., the private gold coin mint and assay company established in California c. 1850. We feel that the original Moffat and Company is a type of minting mentor. Their coins and ingots were of such fine quality, and their reputation for honest dealings was so high that it allowed their coins and ingots to trade at par (face value) with the US mint coin issues. So renowned was the good reputation of Moffat and Company that when it came time for the US government to establish a branch mint in San Francisco, California, the US government called upon the surviving Moffat and Company partners to take on this task.

We at Moffatt & Co. strive for these goals; honest dealings, the highest quality product available, and to develop the reputation as the best private minting company, period.

We look forward to serving you.
